LAMININ FOUNDATION

Holding It All Together

Who are we?

Who and what is Laminin?

Laminins are large cross-shaped, complex, extracellular macromolecules that are major players in the control of a variety of core cell processes, including regulating rates of cell proliferation (cell growth/ division), differentiation (young cells taking on specific characteristics and maturing in form and function), adhesion (cells attaching to other cells), and migration (cell movement due to chemical/ mechanical signals). The laminins and their related proteins, have also been shown to be important players in wound repair and are integral to the structural scaffolding of almost every tissue. Laminin Foundation aims to embody and exemplify these key functions of the laminin protein. Our five ministries and their dedicated members, work together to ensure that we positively affect the lives of those around us. As we personify the laminin characteristics, we intend to become a key source of healthy development for young people, effective aid for those in need, and practical care for medically/ physically challenged persons.

In commemoration of "World Sight Day and White Cane Day" 2021, Ophthalmologist Dr. Desiree Murray suggested that our best estimates, based on the National Eye Survey (2013 - 2014) places 79,000 visually impaired persons, including 10,200 who are blind currently living in T&T.

The Loving the Forgotten (LTF) ministry seeks to address the needs of this often forgotten and neglected community by recruiting, training, and deploying suitable volunteers to provide a range of services to persons who are blind and/or low vision, in need of assistance and who agree to comply with stipulated conditions.

Ministry to the Blind/ Low Vision

Illness and hospitalization can be a challenging and traumatic experience, especially when faced without any resources or support. Thanks to the Laminin Foundation hospital ministry, adults and children in hospitals have access to compassionate friends who can comfort and encourage them, their family members, and their caregivers, as they undertake their journey through illness.

Laminin Hospital Ministry touches the lives of vulnerable adults and children in hospitals and gives them hope through spiritual care, encouragement, and physical support, while also empowering individuals through education on the principles of health and related choices so that they can regain their human dignity.

Domestic Violence Support

Domestic violence is an often quiet, but disturbing and destructive social ill within our society, that reverberates throughout generations. Sadly, it has become so wide-spread and ingrained within our society, that it often appears accepted, and thus largely ignored or misunderstood.

Through the establishment of the Domestic Violence Fund, the Laminin Foundation has positioned itself to respond to the needs of survivors through the provision emergency relocation expenses and access to emotional and psychological support in collaboration with other relevant agencies and organizations.

Casa de Corazon Children's Home, formerly called the Heart Home, was established in 1991 by Pastor Clive Dottin, then Youth Director of the South Caribbean Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Ps. Dottin was supported by Mildred Jones and later, Ms. Angela Joseph of ‘Friends Forever’ in getting the initiative up and running as a response to children who were victims of abuse and abandonment and in need of a safe space.

The Laminin Foundation seeks to recruit and empower a cadre of committed volunteers to support this institution in enhancing the lives of the children that reside at this home.

'SADD' - (Students Against Destructive Decisions) was founded on the simple philosophy that young people, empowered to help each other, are the most effective force in prevention. It empowers and mobilizes students and adult allies to engage in positive change through leadership and smart decision-making. This mission is accomplished by creating, equipping, and sustaining a network of student-run chapters in schools and communities focused on peer-to-peer education. It fosters a sense of belonging and promotes resiliency, leadership, and advocacy skills so that young people make positive life decisions that will carry them throughout life.
