Community Awareness & Victim Support
"Globally, the data and reports have shown that all types of violence against women and girls intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, so much so that this was identified as the shadow pandemic."
What we do
According to the Domestic Violence Act 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago, ‘Domestic Violence‘ DV includes physical, sexual, emotional or psychological or financial abuse committed by a person against a spouse, child, or any other person who is a member of the household or dependent. Also known as intimate partner violence, Domestic Violence is a pattern of abusive behaviors, characterized by one partner’s need to control the other by using a range of tactics. While the frequency and severity of physical or sexual violence may vary, coercion, intimidation and emotional manipulation occur on a routine basis throughout the relationship. Volunteers
Our volunteers use their skills, energy and time for activities that help us fund-raise, manage events, public awareness, facilitate training or seminars and support survivors. All volunteers are vetted and trained on topics such as Defining Gender & Gender-Based Violence, Domestic Violence, Child Sexual Abuse & the Children’s Act, as well as communication skills, accessing service providers and understanding the Psychology of Domestic Violence. Volunteering is open to anyone 18 years of age and older who agrees to the Laminin Foundation guidelines related to this ministry. Time commitment will vary from month to month based on survivor needs/requests and the Laminin Calendar of events and can start from as little as 2-4 hours per month. For example, the month of October, designated as Domestic Violence Awareness month typically involves more volunteer hours due to an increased number of activities.
